The Coulton is coming! The Coulton is coming!

As most of you reading this already know, I've been a big fan of Jonathan Coulton for a while. My friend Marty introduced me to his music last year, and I was just floored. I became an instant fan. His songs are wonderful, funny, geeky, infectious earworms, and he's a fantastic performer and producer to boot. I've been covering his songs in Filk circles recently, and most of the Filk community embraced his music just as quickly as I did.

Being from the East coast, he doesn't get very many opportunities to come out here to the Pacific Northwest. Most of his long-distance traveling gigs involve assisting his friend John Hodgman. (You may have seen Hodgman on The Daily Show or on the Macintosh Ads.)

So, it turns out that the Bumbershoot cultural and music festival here in Seattle this year is the location for a benefit event for the 826 Seattle organization this Friday night. And if I'm reading my information correctly, Hodgman and Coulton are emceeing the event. I've already got my tickets to that, and as cool as it's gonna be, it's not what I'm posting about today.

No, what I'm posting about is this: Because Coulton will be unexpectedly staying the weekend in Seattle, he's made a call to his Seattle fans to arrange for him a last-minute gig for this Saturday night. It seems as though the call was answered quite quickly, and he's now in the final planning stages of nailing down the venue.

Folks, it doesn't matter what the final venue ends up being, if you're in the Seattle area, do not miss this. He might end up in a place as small as a coffee shop, or as big as a theater downtown, but whatever happens, be there.

Check back at either Coulton's home page or this discussion thread over the next couple of days to find out the exact location and time of Saturday evening's gig. Then bring yourself and all your friends to that place at that time. You won't be sorry.

Update: JC Has Just posted the details. It's at the Jewelbox Theater in downtown Seattle, Saturday, September 2nd, at 8:00 PM. Tickets will be only $10.00, although parking in Belltown on Saturday night is probably gonna cost you, too. Although I've never been there, my understanding is that the Jewelbox is the theater attached to the Rendevous bar, thus, this is a 21-and-over gig. I'm also told that this is nearby the very popular Mama's mexican restaurant, which I HAVE been to, and which is quite good.

Oh, you evil, evil, evil man. I wonder how I'll manage this.

If you're referring to managing [livejournal.com profile] datavore and his excitement, look at the bright side, it could have been worse: Coulton could have agreed to do a house concert at his place. He'd be beside himself. :-)

If you mean that you wonder how you'll manage to get to the Saturday gig, well, shoot, I'll help if I can.

I'd actually not been aware of him but today after reading your post I read Jeff's link to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ANKT2PMoAQ

Beautiful song.

I have a GUEST.

Well, he'd just better like Coulton is all I have to say.

Ah. He will. :-)

Hmm! [livejournal.com profile] lecion and I might be there, if the stars all align and the crick don't rise.

Indeed. For another video of a Coulton song, see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gEw8xpb1aRA&NR.

Wonderful! See you there!

He'd be beside himself.

That would be useful for certain party tricks.

Keep in mind that all these videos are fan-made videos.

Somewhat improbably, I have convinced my husband to drive down to Seattle on Saturday so I can see the Coulton. Score!

Heee! Very cool. Make sure to check back and get the details of the venue before heading down.

(For those reading this, Brooke is from Vancouver, British Columbia.)

So sad.

I cried and cried and cried and thought about it and decided that was a very appropriate reaction. He was obviously very well loved and had parents/partners that were not afraid to show it.

If we'd not already booked the B&B and ferry and dinner with another couple and no refunds I'd be there in a shot.

I can't help but think this conversation should be taking place on [livejournal.com profile] monkeyminions. Still a pity I'm so busy this weekend.

Didn't know about that community. Just joined. Thanks. :-)

I couldn't agree with you more about JC. As I write this, I am listening to "Shop Vac".

If you need me
I'll be listen-
ing to Coulton
You can call but I probably won't hear you
Because it's loud with "The Shop Vac" on

I don't recall when I first heard of JC, but it was probably through you, so thanks.

The reason I don't care for much current popular music seems to be that most of it isn't written by Coulton.
