Not a thing did she suspect.

Baycon was fantastic! Photos and video from the convention are here.

Vixy and I were hoping to arrive in time for Callie's concert, and we would have if it weren't for... get this... a broken windshield wiper on the airplane. I kid you not. We saw them working on it at the gate.

Our concert went quite well, with the assistance of the Bohnhoffs and Callie, followed by Vixy and Seanan assisting the Bohnhoffs in their concert. Boy, they sounded great. Video can be found in the gallery. Puzzlebox and Brocelïande were fantastic, too, as always.

The best part about the weekend was on Friday night, when Kanef blindsided Vixy with his brilliant cross-parody of her song The Girl That's Never Been. He took the story of the old tune "Have Some Madeira, My Dear", and crammed it into the melody of "Girl", with some of the most clever wordplay and cross-referencing I've seen him do so far. One particularly clever bit was so layered that it didn't hit me until I was replaying the song in my head later that weekend. A tour de force. Some people in pop music have said, "you know you've made it when Weird Al parodies you." Well, in Filk, the same applies to getting Kaneffed. And for my money, Bob's a much better parodist than Al, so as far as I'm concerned, it's even better.

Edit: Con reports by Harold, Vixy Friday and Vixy Saturday/Sunday are online.

Next on the calendar, I see we've got Pondfilk in June. And oh yeah, the Bohnhoffs will be there, too, so we'll get to see them again! I'd love to make it to Concertino, but probably won't be able to, unfortunately. Those who are going, have a great time, and take lots of pictures!

Which bit did you not get until the next day?

"But the ones her mother gave her don’t mean anything at all".

On Saturday, I laughed at it because it sounded like the line in "Girl" that said, "It's nothing like a writing desk at all", and because it was a reference to the verse in "Madeira" about her mom's cryptic advice. Okay, I had those layers down already. But it wasn't until I was in the restroom Sunday night, washing my face, when I looked in the mirror and totally out of the blue grokked the other three layers: It's almost a direct quote from Jefferson Airplane's "White Rabbit" (1), which is a song about Alice (since "Girl" was about Alice) (2), and it's also a song with drug references (since "Girl" contains drug references) (3).

On reflection, that stuff should have been immediately obvious to me. For some reason it chose to kick my ass an entire day later, instead.

Kanef gives gifts that keep on giving. :-)

See, and that? That I would never have gotten at all.

I didn't get it right away either. I was just too chicken to admit it. :)

Ah yes, I thought I felt your spirit presence. When there was someone in the hall playing a very fancy theremin!
