Because it wouldn't have been England without a James Bond moment...
We're back in the US after our trip. Not sure how the jet lag and the lingering colds are going to affect us yet...Our host, Mike Whitaker, has has posted his account of the Amazing James Bond Backpack Rescue, just as we were leaving the convention.
We'd timed it just right so that we could grab a quick bite at breakfast on Monday morning, and then dash off to the train station in Mike's car, to catch the train to London (and from there to Heathrow to make our flight). Our train tickets had been pre-purchased and were non-refundable (to save significant expense), so it was imperative that we make that specific train.
We arrived at the train station with (we thought) plenty of time to spare, but as we were getting our bags out of the car, we discovered that I'd stupidly left Vixy's backpack back at the hotel. I'd missed it when packing the car, left it sitting on the sidewalk. Her backpack contained many important things, including her passport, and we couldn't leave without it. There wasn't enough time to drive back to the hotel to get it; the train was arriving in mere minutes. PANIC. The timer on the doomsday bomb was counting down.
Mike calmly got out his cell phone and made a few phone calls back to the convention. He reached someone, to whom he said, "we need the backpack at the train station NOW". The word "NOW" must have carried just exactly the right amount of urgency, because amazingly, a car containing Rick and Joe bearing the backpack arrived, just exactly as the train pulled into the station. We high-fived everyone and flew aboard, just exactly as the bomb timer reached zero. SNIP, disaster averted.
Our flight back was pleasant and relaxed (BA treats you well), and all is right with the world.
Thank you, everyone at Van Der Filk, who helped us during the weekend, and especially, thank you to everyone involved in that last minute rescue operation.

Isn't it great when The Amazing Filkdom gets it's act together so fabulously and plays the part of the knight in shining armour riding to the rescue on a pearlwhite charger? :)
